Electronic
Data Interchange:
"Have your computer call our computer."
EDI, or Electronic
Data Interchange, is the computer-to-computer transmission and receipt
of data -- for example, information on a freight bill -- without
a paper copy, that conforms to an established industry standard
format.
As more and
more companies rely on EDI to reduce paperwork and error rates,
Atlas is prepared to help them cut their freight costs even more
through the post-auditing process.
The key to successful
post-audits with EDI is ensuring that EDI-generated billing information
contains all the data Atlas normally reviews on hard copy bills
in the appropriate industry-established format.
The American
National Standards Institute (ANSI) approved a set of EDI standards
known as the “X12” standards that ensures that each
document, no matter who generated it, can be read by all parties
concerned. For freight bills, there are four appropriate standard
formats that every freight carrier using EDI for billing is obligated
to use. These formats are:
• Standard
#110 for AIR FREIGHT bills
• Standard
#210 for TRUCKING bills
• Standard
#310 for OCEAN FREIGHT bills
• Standard
#410 for RAIL FREIGHT bills.
Atlas Traffic’s
Information Technology Group specialists will work with any client
to assure that the process of auditing EDI-generated freight bills
works smoothly.
